To size your panel, evenly apply a thin coat of glue to all sides of the board using a big brush. Quality varies, so go with an artist’s quality brand like Gamblin. Rabbit-skin glue was traditionally used by Old Masters, but it isn’t very stable, so I’m using PVA here. You can size your board with either rabbit-skin glue or PVA glue. If wood is not sized properly, it can slowly disintegrate over time as the paint will penetrate the board and may cause it to rot. Sizing involves putting a barrier between the support and the primer to stop water penetrating and causing damage. Scuff the board lightly until it feels smooth. This will help the gesso primer grab onto the surface of the board and remove any splinters or unevenness. It is a good idea to start by giving your board a light sanding.
